Slow Food Detroit

Another great organization promoting Healthy People is the Slow Food organization, and for the Detroit Metro area (our area), Slow Food Detroit. Help Melinda and Vicki support the local and slow food movements by attending on of the local events! And check out the US Slow Food organization for a Slow Food group in your area.

All part of taking back local control of our food systems and enjoying the bounty of fresh, slow cooked meals!!

Brand of the Free

My wife, Yvette, came across this site, Brand of the Free, which sells organic and Made in US products. Kudo's to them for putting the two together and helping all of us remember that there is a higher cost to 'cheap' products made overseas than we realize.

Buy Local, Buy US.

Ha

I was able to launch Harvest Michigan with a shopping cart early this morning. Harvest Michigan features non-perishables and perishable items. We are going slow with the perishables and would ask patience to our customers as we help the farmers (local and small, family owned) bring their bounty to our tables.

Why local, small & family owned? Well, we believe that is were everything needs to go back to. There is no need for a global company to bring food in from across the country and globe when the majority of our food stuffs can be made & grown locally. It is called regaining control of our food systems.

There are big, family owned farms - and by nature of being big do not need our help, and are usually (but not always) growing the 'common' crops that get exported out of the state. Now, that is important, but we have plenty of farm land to be able to supply more of our own food.

Independence Day

We hope everyone had a wonderful Independence Day weekend - And we would like everyone to keep in mind that although the US is experiencing a rocky economic situation, that we are still the beacon of Democracy in the World.

In challenging the 'corporate' food industry, that admittedly has brought us cheap foodstuffs - but also recalled beef, spinach, salsa (first was tomatoes, no it was the jalapeno's), not to mention poisoned pet food and toys with lead paint; we are launching Harvest Michigan, that will feature products made in Michigan. We are working through the 'gray' area of products that are primarily produced in Michigan, but might be finished in another state.

The Harvest concept will also be rolled out across America in other states, tied to a common shopping cart so we can support local businesses and also find our favorite out-of-state products.

With sites like MadeinUSAForever.com 'handling' non-grocery items, the Harvest concept will primarily focus on non-perishable grocery items and perishable items when it makes sense.

Pure Bar

Ok, I'll shamelessly promote a Michigan product today (since we're the only state in a true recession the last two years we need a little help!). But the Pure Bar doesn't need much help, it has great ingredients and great taste - so far the Blueberry flavor is my favorite.

Check out the other flavors!

Michigan Green Safe Products

We are now carrying almost all of Michigan Green Safe Products, which are earth friendly and bio-degradable. All of us should be thinking about the plastic forks, knives, spoons, cups, covers, etc that we put into the ground - plant based products degrade much quicker and into a mass that isn't toxic.
